Patient Info

What to Expect at Your Child’s Eye Appointment:

Upon arrival we will ask you to fill out a registration form with basic personal details such as address, date of birth, Medicare card number and your referral.

You will first be seen by one of our Orthoptists who takes a thorough medical and eye history, and checks your child’s current glasses (if applicable). A comprehensive Orthoptic examination follows which can include vision, eye alignment, eye movements, convergence and stereovision. Your child’s pupil reactions are then assessed and dilating drops instilled in your child’s eyes. You will be asked to take a seat in the waiting room whilst the drops take effect (approx 1 hr).

The Ophthalmologist then calls you in. Some tests may be repeated as well as a refraction (tests the need for glasses) and a media and fundus exam (i.e. a health check of all parts of the eye). The doctor will discuss any important findings and instigate any treatment. Additional tests such as visual fields or electrophysiology (testing of the electrical impulses that travel from the eye) may be ordered on occasion. You may be asked to return for follow up if necessary where dilating drops may or may not need to be instilled again.
